When your evening begins with a handsome man in glittering platform shoes ushering you to your seat, you know you’re in for a great time. And that’s what we had at the latest instalment of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus concert series “That 70’s Show”.
Over the course of two hours, the chorus covered many of the genres of the seventies – folk, glam rock and, of course, disco. The choreography was spectacular and precise. The soloists were emotive and harmonic. And the set and costume design very much added to the overall ambience of nostalgia – a reminder of a time when movements like “free love” emblazoned the masses to challenge the social structures of the time.
Amidst the endless supply of youthful exuberance in this excellent production, there is a deeper message of love and acceptance that permeates the performance. The chorus appears grateful for the opportunity to share their stories and their talents, and that appreciation comes through in the passion they bring to each number. While the fanfare is fun and fantastic, this reviewer is still most appreciative of the more pensive moments – when 100 talented singers come together in harmony, it does more than just fill the room with sound, it fills your soul.
