“Backbone” is the latest show by the Australian circus group Gravity and Other Myths. Directed by Darcy Grant, the performance reflects an organic composition of playful interactions through extraordinary dance and acrobatic talent. It has a Cirque du Soleil vibe but is a more intimate affair rather than a mere display of circus acrobatics that would feel distant and clinical.

The sombre live music is another aspect that adds to this intimacy. From body contortions that made everyone in the audience hold their breath to terrifying stunts that made all our hearts stop in their tracks – “Backbone” enthralled us. It kept us at the edge of our seats from start till finish. The performers used rocks and props to explore themes of strength and the performers’ movements tested human limits.

This was an outstanding performance that far exceeded our expectations – this was the reaction of two reviewers from the Vancouver Arts Review, myself and my plus one, MG. After watching the show, we both could not stop talking about how amazed we were. The experience was also a shared one as the entire audience clapped at the success of each stunt. We were mesmerized by the performers’  intricate contortions through which each performer played a distinct character. This made the circus-acts themselves a mode through which stories were told.

The opening night was a resounding success with a lengthy standing ovation. The show left most of us convinced that these performers were an evolved species because what they did on stage was bloody unbelievable!
