Katharine Ferns Is In Stitches
Brave has a new name and it is Katharine Ferns. This Fringe show is a dark comedy and stand-up routine that keeps us on the edge for the entire hour. There are times when we laugh, others when we shudder uncomfortably and more still where we simply applaud the courage laid bare on stage. “Katharine Ferns Is In Stitches” is a story about abuse and the horror of its ubiquity. It seamlessly masks the haunting details of lived experience with punch lines that will have you in “stitches”. Though this show makes light of many things that are recognizably anything but trivial, it brilliantly unveils the seriousness of violence through wit and impeccable comedic talent.
Echoes
An array of light eclipses, shadow play and abstract dance, “Echoes” is transient and enchanting. This Vancouver based production was a welcoming sign of home with talent that did us all proud. The familiar sample of an old Bollywood song ‘Chora liya hai” made an intriguing appearance in the performance, displaying the breadth of influences on this piece. Although I felt the performance was a little too long, the 50-minute duration is worth a watch for those who enjoy contemporary and experimental dance. It is not a bad choice for those looking to broaden and diversify their artistic taste.
Living Will
This ensemble production tackles the daunting but inevitable process of aging and its interaction with our health care system. “Living Will” attempts to grasp at answers for difficult questions while perplexing the audience, leaving them to reflect on their choices and beliefs. Pulling at our heartstrings, the play resonates with the audience through the portrayal of times where we have made tough calls or might have to in the future. It strikes a chord with every age group, both the young and the elderly. It forces us to challenge what we think is in our best interest or that of others in the context of making a literal life or death decision. An informative production, “Living Will” is an important lesson in life’s tug of war between what seems right versus what feels right.
The Merkin Sisters
This show will have you laughing your heart out till you drop to the floor- only to laugh some more! “The Merkin Sisters” is an unrestricted and quirky production, full of unexpected chuckles and uninhibited comedy. It is a must-see for everyone at the Toronto Fringe – unless of course, you fall on the pruder side and can’t handle humour that knows little bounds. The performers, Ingrid Hansen and Stephanie Morin-Robert (based in Victoria, BC) integrate the audience within the show, constantly sensing the pulse of the patrons to ensure that every show is unique and nothing less than sensational. The program describes the plot as revolving around “two fallen socialites endeavour to create the Ultimate Piece of Art, using any means necessary”. There is nothing not to love about this vaudeville renaissance piece! The pairing of the music, audience participation and sheer talent of the performers is lethal. Get ready to have your panties wet because you’ll be laughing till you pee!
